The exhibition The Hidden Side of the Archive offers a fascinating dive into the history of Parkett, a contemporary art periodical published between 1984 and 2017 in Zurich and New York. For over three decades, Parkett played a key role in the dissemination of contemporary art, establishing itself as a bilingual publication (German and English) that brought together and presented internationally renowned artists. With its 101 issues and 270 artistic collaborations, the magazine is a true witness to the evolution of the art world and an open window into creative dialogues between various practices, cultures, and ways of thinking.
Beyond its editorial role, Parkett is also a living manifesto of contemporary art, providing a platform for debates, experiments, and reflections surrounding artists and their works. Each issue became a conversation between the artists themselves and with the communities surrounding art through writings, interviews, and visual projects. Parkett thus played a vital role in documenting and highlighting the transformations that shaped the art world over time.
Sigmar Polke, an iconic artist of the 20th century and close friend of the magazine, was involved with Parkett from the start. Present at the launch of the first issue, Polke took on the role of documentarian, capturing this pivotal event with his 16mm camera, preserving valuable visual traces of a key period in contemporary art. His involvement in the history of Parkett is significant, not only as a collaborating artist but also as an engaged witness to this unique editorial journey. The exhibition thus reflects this close relationship between the artist and the periodical, through unpublished archives and rare pieces that reveal the behind-the-scenes of this foundational project.
At the Luma Foundation, visitors can discover fascinating visual archives displayed through video projections and interactive screens. These installations highlight the artistic contributions of Polke and many of the artists who collaborated with Parkett, offering an immersive and enriching experience. The archives not only reveal the evolution of the publication but also the interactions between artists, ideas, and movements that shaped the contemporary art scene.
Through this exhibition, The Hidden Side of the Archive invites us to rediscover the history of a periodical that left its mark on its time and to dive into the intimacy of its archives, while highlighting Sigmar Polke's indelible impact on 20th-century art.
