Jakob KUDSK STEENSEN, "Liminal Lands"
Jakob Kudsk Steensen's Liminal Lands immerses the viewer in the unique and fascinating landscape of the Camargue. Through this work, Steensen invites the audience to explore an environment where nature, technology, and imagination converge to create a unique multisensory experience. This project, designed using advanced digital tools, unveils the wild beauty and hidden mysteries of this territory, while evoking the subtle and often invisible processes that shape the natural world.
The work takes the form of an immersive video installation utilizing LED screens, 5.1 surround sound, and virtual reality (VR) technologies to offer a total, enveloping experience. Steensen’s goal is to create a liminal space, a place between two worlds, where the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred. The use of technology allows the viewer to move freely within this virtual universe, where nature merges with digital artifice, giving rise to landscapes that are both real and imagined.
In Liminal Lands, Steensen questions the relationship between humans and nature, exploring the landscapes around us that we often tend to ignore or neglect. The work highlights how natural processes, often invisible to the naked eye, continue to shape and evolve independently of our presence. The Camargue, with its vast wetlands, ponds, and wild grasses, becomes a site for poetic and philosophical exploration, where natural elements interact with contemporary phenomena and ecological concerns.
By presenting this work at the Fondation Luma, in the space of La Mécanique Générale, Jakob Kudsk Steensen invites us to a profound reflection on our relationship with the environment and the ongoing changes in the natural world. Liminal Lands offers a vision of the future where humans and nature become one, where every element, every detail, and every sound echoes a larger, often invisible, reality.
