Constellations by Laurent Valera: collective work
Laurent Valera, an artist whose works invite contemplation and reflection, created a unique experience at the Musée des Alpilles in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. His installation, titled Constellations, was a true celebration of light, sound, and video, a harmonious blend of different artistic mediums that came to life under the spotlight. Through this collective work, Valera succeeded in capturing the magic of water and light, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere that enchanted visitors.
The centerpiece of this installation was the arrangement of thousands of glasses, carefully placed to form a shimmering constellation. These glasses acted as vessels, capturing light and transforming it into a radiant glow that reflected off the surrounding façades of the museum. At night, the installation transformed into a luminous memorial, where each glass symbolized a star, a candle, or a thought. The overall effect was that of a starry sky, with every light reflection offering a sense of intimacy and connection.
The artist’s words resonated as an invitation to explore the depth of his work: "The magic of water then expresses itself, evoking thousands of candles whose reflections flood the surrounding façades." This statement perfectly encapsulated the essence of the installation, where water, used as a medium to diffuse light, played a central role, adding both a poetic and symbolic dimension to the piece.
The use of sound, light, and video helped create an immersive atmosphere, captivating spectators not only visually but also audibly. The sound effects added an additional layer to the experience, creating an enveloping atmosphere that enhanced the sense of contemplation and wonder. The video projections, on the other hand, integrated seamlessly into the overall installation, adding a layer of dynamism and movement to this luminous spectacle.
This installation was on display at the Musée des Alpilles from March 30 to April 2, 2023, and attracted a wide audience, mesmerized by the beauty and poetry emanating from each element of the work. The project also served as a tribute to nature and the elements, with special attention given to how light and water can create connections between art, the environment, and human emotion.
The choice of the museum as the exhibition venue only added to the magic of the event. The historic building, with its stone walls, offered a striking contrast to the modernity of the installation. The venue became a space where the boundaries between art and environment blurred, allowing visitors to escape into a unique sensory experience that harmoniously combined tradition and innovation. The meeting of Laurent Valera’s work with this exceptional site offered visitors a true immersion into a poetic and luminous world.
