Drawing in Concert: A Meeting Between Music and Visual Creation
Drawing, whether in art, humor, press, or outsider art, holds a crucial place in the creative process, whether for sculptors, architects, writers, poets, filmmakers, or even great figures of fashion. Often at the origin of many artistic or technical works, sketches and drawings serve as starting points for imagining, transforming, and bringing ideas to life. Indeed, drawing allows for giving form to the abstract, capturing the moment, and expressing a multitude of emotions, often long before the final work is completed.
For the first edition of this unique event, taking place from April 22 to May 14, the Orchestre National de Cannes invites the public to an innovative experience where music and drawing intertwine. This original collaboration brings together artists Anna Sommer and Joël Person, who will engage in live drawing during the concerts. Thus, the audience will be able to witness a dynamic where visual works come to life alongside the musical performance, creating an unprecedented artistic fusion between sound and image.
During these concerts, the artists will draw in real time, and their creations will be projected live, offering a total immersion into the creative process. The sketches, drawings, and illustrations, which emerge alongside the music, will become works in their own right, enhancing the symbiosis between the sounds of the orchestra and the artists’ gestures. This dynamic process will highlight the interaction between music and visual art, allowing the audience to witness the evolution of a work in progress, alongside the musical interpretation that accompanies it.
This groundbreaking project also highlights the power of drawing as both a tool for communication and expression, not only as an artistic discipline but also as a means of bringing music to life and enriching it. Each stroke, each nuance of color or line drawn by Anna Sommer and Joël Person will be a visual response to the musical vibrations produced by the orchestra, creating a sort of dialogue between the artists and the musical work being performed.
Beyond the visual aspect, this project invites reflection on the relationship between different forms of art. Drawing, as a visual medium, and music, as a sonic language, come together to open new creative and sensory perspectives. The public will thus appreciate this first edition as a true artistic laboratory, where the improvisation and spontaneity of live drawings enrich the musical experience, while highlighting the richness of the interaction between these two art forms.
