Arthur JAFA, "Live Evil"
Arthur Jafa, one of the most significant and influential artists of his generation, continues to deeply engage with the social and cultural realities of contemporary America, particularly through the lens of the Black experience. With Live Evil, presented at the Luma Foundation in Arles, Jafa explores the complex tensions that exist between African American culture and society, highlighting essential themes such as life, death, and human identity.
In Live Evil, the artist presents an immersive experience where viewers are confronted with two 4k video projections, accompanied by impactful stereo sound and lighting that completely transforms the space. This installation, which blends advanced technology with profound social reflection, invites the audience to introspect on the realities of Black life in America and the historical legacy of this experience.
Throughout his career, Jafa has distinguished himself with his ability to translate the power, beauty, and complexity of Black culture through various mediums. His works highlight the richness of African American culture while exploring the contradictions and challenges inherent in the Black condition within a world still marked by deep racial inequalities. This work represents an aesthetic and social quest for truth, a way for the artist to depict the constant struggle between forms of cultural expression and the realities of a society that struggles to reconcile its racial divisions.
Through Live Evil, Jafa continues his exploration of the relationship between Black culture and the dominant society, while offering a reflection on how individuals and communities experience and engage with issues related to race, violence, spirituality, and resistance. His works aim to create a space for dialogue and provoke collective awareness about the importance of understanding and deconstructing racial relations. As a prolific producer, the artist seeks to capture the contradictions of our time while offering an artistic form of expression that transcends boundaries of genres and media.
In this work, the experience of being Black—often absent or poorly represented in dominant narratives—takes on its full scope and strength, allowing the audience to feel the beauty, pain, and intensity of the experiences lived by Black communities. Jafa’s Live Evil thus becomes an essential element in understanding current racial dynamics and the issues of our time through art.
