▪️iDzia installation: Sound and light

From February 8 to May 8, 2023, the MUCEM (Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean) in Marseille hosted the exhibition "Alexandria: Future Anteriors", a fascinating retrospective that revisits the history and present of the legendary Egyptian city. The exhibition steers away from the usual representations of Alexandria, often tinged with myths and stereotypes, to offer a fresh and nuanced view of this multifaceted city. Combining archaeological research and contemporary art, the exhibition invites visitors to explore Alexandria from a completely new and dynamic perspective.

One of the key features of this exhibition was its multidimensional approach, blending historical artifacts with works from contemporary artists. This combination allowed for an exploration of the many layers of Alexandria's history, from its ancient origins to its modern influences. By merging these two approaches—the archaeological and the artistic—the exhibition offers a global perspective that enriches our understanding of a city that has always been a crossroads of cultures, knowledge, and exchange.

At the heart of this immersive presentation, the sound and light installation created by iDzia played an essential role in creating a unique atmosphere. The installation, which combined sound and light, transformed the exhibition space into a true sensory journey through time and history. Light projections, accompanied by sound compositions, metaphorically embodied the various epochs of Alexandria, from glowing imagery representing the grandeur of antiquity to modern pulses symbolizing the city’s contemporary spirit.

The interplay of light illuminated the artifacts, while the subtly composed music amplified the visual impact, inviting viewers to immerse themselves fully in the city’s temporal and cultural dimensions. These projections symbolized the intersection of Alexandria’s different eras, where the past and the future coexist in a city that is constantly evolving.

By revisiting Alexandria’s history through this hybrid lens, the exhibition provided a fresh perspective on the city. It allowed the audience to go beyond clichés and see Alexandria not only as an ancient and grand city but also as a vital center for contemporary cultures, a space in perpetual transformation, enriched by exchanges between diverse civilizations.

Thus, Alexandria: Future Anteriors was an invitation to reconsider the city in a new light, while shedding light on the richness and complexity of its history through a meeting of past and present, art and research, sound and light.
