📍 MUCEM, Marseille

▪️ IDzia setup : Sound, Light

The Mucem, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations in Marseille, welcomed one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time: Ai Weiwei. The exhibition, titled Fan-Tan, offered visitors an immersive journey into the world of this multifaceted Chinese artist—photographer, architect, sculptor, filmmaker, and activist. His work, recognized globally, challenges political, social, and cultural issues of our time, blending Eastern traditions with Western conceptual approaches.

For the opening night of this exceptional exhibition on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, the Mucem entrusted iDzia with the technical setup for sound and lighting. Designed as a major event in Marseille’s cultural season, the evening needed to match both the prestige of the artist and the architectural uniqueness of the venue. iDzia brought its full expertise to deliver a technically precise and artistically sensitive production.

The sound system was carefully integrated into the space, respecting the distinctive architecture of the Mucem—with its mix of glass, concrete, and stone lattice. The goal was to ensure a clear, evenly distributed sound without distortion, supporting official speeches, planned performances, and ambient audio elements related to the exhibition.

For the lighting, iDzia implemented a custom setup that interacted with the museum’s architecture and enhanced the overall scenography. The lighting design was subtle and precise, crafted to highlight the emotional depth of Ai Weiwei’s work without overpowering the art itself. By playing with volumes, shadows, and textures, the lighting helped create an elegant, immersive atmosphere throughout the space.

The inauguration of Fan-Tan was a memorable evening, rich in emotion and dialogue, leaving a lasting impression not only through the power of Ai Weiwei’s work but also through the quality of its presentation. Thanks to its technical expertise and ability to adapt to the constraints of a museum setting, iDzia played a key role in elevating the experience, making this event a true highlight of Marseille’s cultural calendar. It was a successful collaboration where art, architecture, and technology came together to serve a universal message.
